Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of an infant. Aunt Denise was a nurse and worked night shifts so that she could devote her day to art literature and theatre. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's examples of that art can be an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay grew up with an aunt who was aware of her social circle and showed her how to utilize art as a method of expression. DuVernay, who grew up living with family members in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The time she spent in Selma Alabama was later the inspiration to make a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she was awarded diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. Her first job was as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. When she was dissatisfied with journalism due to the work she was handed and deciding to go after an interest in public relations. DuVernay found a job immediately from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Additionally, she started a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective. Allyson Michael Felix is the Los Angeles native born on November 18th, 1985. She was the daughter of Paul Felix was an ordained minister at the Master's Seminary in Sun Valley as well as the mother of her child Marlean Felix was a school teacher at Balboa Magnet Elementary School.
